How To Prepare Your Sump Pump for Summer Storms
The arrival of summer means that heavy storms are also on their way. This is the time of year when sump pumps are most active, transferring water from basement-level areas to the ground level. Without properly functioning sump pumps, homeowners could see their basements flooded with rainwater.
The good news — many sump pump failures can be prevented by taking a few precautions. Here’s how to prepare your sump pump for summer storms.
Test the Float Switch
Pour water into the basin to make sure the float switch activates when the water reaches a certain level. The float switch is the only mechanism that triggers the sump pump, so if it malfunctions, your basement can flood.
Check for clogs
Test your sump pump by pouring a bucket of water into the sump pit. If the pump doesn’t activate or drain quickly, it might be clogged. Check the inlet screen and check valves for clogs. Sometimes washing machine debris, dirt, gravel or sand will get caught in the pump, which you will need to remove manually.
Check the Power Outlet
Sump pumps rely on electricity, so the outlet your sump pump is plugged into must be working. Turn on the pump and make sure you hear it functioning before the first big summer storm. If you lose power during a storm for an extended period, draw some power from a generator for the sump pump, or replace your sump pump with a model that has a battery backup.
Clean the Pump
Turn off the pump and disconnect it from the outlet. Then, remove the sump pump from the basin and scrub off any dirt, sediment, and debris that could clog the pump’s components. Use a stiff-bristled brush.
You can also schedule a sump pump maintenance appointment with a certified local plumber to clean your pump.
Review the Age of the Pump and Look for Corrosion
Sump pumps, on average, last about 10 years. Take a moment to review the age of your pump and its recent history of needed repairs. It might be time for a replacement. Also, look for signs of corrosion. If left unchecked, corrosion will rapidly decrease your sump pump’s effectiveness and service life.
Inspect the Pump After Each Heavy Storm
Check your sump pump after each storm to ensure that it’s functioning efficiently to avoid surprise flooding. Doing so can help prevent uncomfortable humidity or severe water damage in your basement.
